Chapter 1
Observing
At the edge of a small African forest, a young crow was watching a baby elephant play in the shallow water.
What if he steps where the water is deep and falls in? How careless, thought the crow.
Still, something about the little elephant caught her eye. Out of all the animals in the forest, she couldn’t stop watching him. Every day, she came back to see what he was doing. She even heard his parents warn him a few times, but it never worked.
As soon as they looked away, and he felt a little bit of freedom, he used it all at once. He looked like any other elephant the crow had seen, too young to have tusks, but his big ears and long trunk were always moving. They were never still. That made him different from the others.
I would never be like that, the crow thought. She was learning from the elephant how not to behave.
She was careful. She stayed away from danger, even from being seen at all.
Or at least, that’s what she thought.
